New Semester, New Project :)
The Match Moving module has now finished so there will no longer be any updates on this blog. I’ve created a new blog to show the progress I make whilst on the compositing module, which can be located here: www.thcb.tumblr.com Tim

Final Render Here is the final render for my matchmoving project 3. There are definitely some issues with it, and had I known what I know now I would have done things very differently. All in all, I’ve learnt bucket loads! I really like the way the arm dissolves away and I’m really happy with that part. There is however some jerky movement making the cg bone jump around a little...

Let there be smoke! I want my arm to dissolve away to show the bones underneath, and decided turning into smoke would be a good way of acheiving this. I used 3ds Max’s particle flow emitter, and created a customised particle flow chart to produce the desired result. I’ve found a really good way of creating very realistic smoke with friendy render times :) The arm dissapearing was...

Rotoscoping - Part 2 Hours upon countless hours were spent tediously removing the arm from the footage using various tools in After Effects. I took a still frame, clone brushed out my arm, and used the Motion Track tools to track the still along with the video. I then masked out the frame to just where the arm was. Lots of touched up frames were requried as this is a rotating shot. I really...

I’m happy with the resulting geometry track. There are a few problems with it, especially when considering rotation, but this can be tweaked using keyframs in 3ds Max.

Free Move Footage EDIT: No idea why it’s been published here. I wrote this one first. Odd. Here is the footage I will use for my free move tracking project. It’s very jerky and should present quite a challenge, but I’d like to push myself on this one. It was filmed on an HVX200 with a focal length of 4.8mm, shutter speed of 1/2000th second and aperature of f3.4 at 720p 50fps....

Wireframe Render Due to the very quick uv unwrapping I performed on the geometry the checkers are a little wonky and don’t line up. Here is a wireframe render to show that everything matches up as it should.

Nodal Pan Project - Final Render Here is the final video for the second match moving project. The 3D matches really well with the video footage and I’m happy with the final result. If I were to spend more time on this I would add deformations to the building with fire coming out of broken windows etc. I also used relatively low render settings for the fire due to the large calculation time;...

Nodal Pan Checkers Test Render This was a test video to establish how well the track worked. I’m pleased with the result so will continue on with this project. The geometry does line up with the horizontal and vertical lines on the building, unfortunately my quick uv unwrapping doesn’t - hence the checkers looking a little off.

Nodal Pan Projet - Original Footage Here is the footage I will be using for the second project. I plan on animating a meteor hitting the building. Due to the marks for this module being in the track itself, i’ll make sure this is well documented and matches very well. I thought I’d make it slightly more interesting for myself by adding some animation.

Lens Corrected Table Pan Track Here is the completed re-render of the Table Pan Track. There is no slipping in this video so it looks like the only problem last time was lens distortion. From now on I’ll make sure to fix this issue before importing into PFTrack.

Nodal Table Pan Final Render Here is the render produced using the pan footage. I’m very happy with the track considering how quickly I set up the scene. There is some definite slipping and can be seen as the left chair comes into view. For a practice track I’m happy with the result, but if this were a more important project I would refine the track to reduce slipping. One of the main...

Nodal Pan Table Track My friend Ben and I spent a couple of hours filming a load of pans for our next matchmoving project due in 3 weeks. I have chosen to practise tracking using the above footage as there are many track points available. There is quite a bit of noise in the footage but it was recorded at 720p so this shouln’t be too much of a problem. I have quite an ambitious idea so this...

Week 4 Footage Here is the completed footage for the week 4 exercise. This was a simple panning shot tracked in PFtrack, but proved quite difficult to track due to the trees blowing in the wind. The overall track is however very good and matches very well to the video. This is much more apparent in a higher res video instead of this one. Unfortunately I seem to have exported it slightly wrong...

Taking it Further I really wasn’t happy with the way the feet slipped in my final render, and also wanted to try and make the locked off shot look a little more natural. In After Effects I created several null objects and linked them in series to each other. I then used the wiggler tool and added shake to each null object of varying amounts. The video was then linked to the null...

Locked Camera Final Render Here is the final video showing the completed project. The character matches well and required very little colour correction to fit in with the scene. I rendered everything using OpenEXR which allowed a large amount of control in post production.

Getting the Correct Scale Along with various measurements I also took a video of my flatmate walking along the drive. This will help me match up the character to the picture and ensure I correctly scale it proportionately.

Week 2 Footage Here is the completed footage for the week 2 exercise. The panning shot was put into PFTrack to calculate, and then exported as a MaxScript and loaded into 3ds Max. I created a few boxes and then brought both image sequences into After Effects. Keylight was used to remove the green screen colour, and quite a bit of colour correction was required on Dan as he came out very...
